My Erasmus Travel Diary by Noemi
Our Erasmus started on Sunday the 10th of November. We arrived in Barcelona - Spain at 12.30, flying from Venice airport. We got the train ticket from El Prat Airport to Sitges and left our bags at the hotel.
We walked around the city the whole afternoon: we had some sandwiches, sat on the cliffs and watched the sea from Sitges beaches.
After exploring the city, we returned to the hotel to pick up our bags and join the other countries at Pia Escuela School for the Welcoming Party
The Spanish hosting families prepared some specialities like food and drinks and we all enjoyed time together. We enjoyed ICE BREAKING activities: inflating a balloon, writing our name, and throwing it to exchange and look for each other. Then we did a line where everyone had to share her/his preferences and we had to move left or right to guess what they were. In the end, we met our host Spanish student and at the end that night, we went to our host family to rest after a long journey and an intense day.
The next day, on Monday 11th we arrived at school and, from 8 to 9 am, we waited in a room reviewing our presentation, then we went to the Auditorium and each Country Group presented itself, showing the peculiarities of the landscape, culture, tradition and people of the Country we are from. Spanish students organised a treasure hunt activity around Sitges which allowed us to discover the nicest spots of Sitges and the city's history and traditions.
In the afternoon we went to Barcelona and spent the rest of the day sightseeing there. We saw a couple of famous architectures like Casa Battló, La Pedrera, the Sagrada Familia and the Rincon Modernista, walking in the Graca District. We returned to Sitges at 7 p.m. and had dinner with our host families.
The following morning we took the bus to Barcelona again with all the Erasmus students. First, we visited Joan Miró's foundation where we could appreciate some of his most well-known paintings and a drawing workshop to experiment with Miró and Matisse's styles, learning more about them too, within Spanish contemporary Art and 20th-century history.
At lunch, we moved to the city centre and more specifically to the Barri Gotic where we could see the magnificent city's cathedral in the afternoon. We also had a little time to see some shops and get to know each other better, while walking along the Ramblas. Unfortunately, after lunch, it started to rain and we couldn’t go on with the planned activities. Instead we travelled back to Sitges and ended a little bit earlier..
Workshops of performance and scenography characterized the last two days of our Erasmus mobility in Sitges. All the students were divided into 2 groups who worked together to organize a final show on the beach on Thursday afternoon.
The topic of the final Show was Landscape and Identity. Nearly 20 students painted and prepared the marine scenography and 20 others practised dancing for the final Show. Wednesday and Thursday mornings were all workshops and students were as busy as bees with activities. I was part of the Performance team, together with 20 other girls.
With a professional contemporary dance teacher, we trained and did exercises to understand our body and be able to move according to a choreography we developed together. It was such a great experience. I am quite a shy girl and at the beginning, I didn’t feel confident at the idea of dancing in front of the public but in the end I did it and I was so happy and proud of myself.
Wednesday afternoon Spanish teachers and hosting students taught us about traditional popular dancing and folklore traditions during the Festa Major: the annual feast day celebration, at the end of August, held in honour of Sant Bartolomeu, patron saint of Sitges. After dancing we had a sweet Spanish snack with churros and hot chocolate.
The day before returning home, we eventually performed our Erasmus Show on the beach in Sitges. It was cold and I was so scared but when the music started, everything dissipated and I felt free to express myself. I must admit I enjoyed it a bit too: so many emotions at once!
That night, at eight we closed our Erasmus week with the farewell party: a real party in a disco bar. Students and teachers danced and had fun together for the last time before saying goodbye.
It was a truly unique and special experience. We had the chance to visit and get to know a new city, make friends, and spend great time together.
It helped me grow and get out of my shyness. I will carry this trip in my heart forever.
